What do you get when you mix Beck, horror movies, and small-town Kentucky trauma? Apparently Social Cues, #CageTheElephant’s dark cinema record. “We were watching I Am a Killer while writing ‘House of Glass,’” #BradSchultz tells me. “And #JohnCarpenter—who’s also from Bowling Green—was a huge influence.”
We talk about working with David Campbell, almost making a full movie called The Broken Boy, and why #MattShultz’s brutal divorce lyrics still manage to feel universal. “We’re not writing to be seen as poetic,” Matt says. “We just want to make good songs with great hooks.”
And despite the old narrative, they’ve got no shame about Kentucky anymore. “It was a chip on our shoulder,” Matt says. “Now I come back and finish lyrics here. There’s a humility in this place.”

AIPAC has been furiously urging House Democrats to release messages of steadfast support for Israel in its war with Iran, the Prospect and Drop Site News have learned, even as bipartisan lawmakers come together on a War Powers Act resolution to prevent U.S. troops or funds being used in yet another Middle East conflagration. One member relayed that a colleague had received literally 100 phone calls from members of AIPAC and its allied pressure groups. AIPAC wants House Democratic members to state explicitly that they “stand with Israel” in its actions against Iran aimed at destroying the Islamic Republic’s nuclear capability, and add that Iran “must never have a nuclear weapon.”
...
According to a review of member statements at their congressional websites and on social media, 28 House Democrats have issued messages saying explicitly that they “stand with Israel,” or some close variation thereof. Another 35 express unequivocal support for Israel without using the magic words “stand with Israel” precisely, but they leave no doubt as to the member’s support. And 16 others express “soft” support for Israel, without quite the same inflammatory language. Three statements have been held up by AIPAC in particular, according to sources familiar with the situation, as models for others to follow. Those are from Reps. Greg Landsman (D-OH), Mike Levin (D-CA), and George Whitesides (D-CA). All are “frontline” members who had relatively close elections in 2024.
...
The “stand with Israel” caucus includes some usual suspects who have long backed up Israel’s actions, from Reps. Ted Lieu and Brad Sherman in California, to Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Lois Frankel in Florida, to Problem Solvers and New Democrats like Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) and Brad Schneider (D-IL). But freshman and swing-state members are also well represented—precisely the type of members who survive on large campaign donations from the likes of AIPAC. First-term representatives Johnny Olszewski (D-MD), April McClain Delaney (D-MD), Herbert Conaway (D-NJ), John Mannion (D-NY), and Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA) were all in the explicit “stand with Israel” caucus, while freshman members Luz Rivas (D-CA), Sarah Elfreth (D-MD), Maggie Goodlander (D-NH), Laura Gillen (D-NY), and George Latimer (D-NY) agreed with the sentiment but without the explicit “stand with Israel” wording. Other members in perennially difficult electoral battles, like Reps. Jared Golden (D-ME) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA), stood with Israel as well, along with numerous members of the Congressional Black Caucus.
completely and very normal that a minimum of at least 40% of elected Democrats in Congress are basically fully on board the "Bomb Iran" train. super awesome and cool.
can someone remind me one more time how you "reform" this party? i guess as long as all of these congresspeople say that they love gay people and abortion and scrunch up their face and say "mmmm noooooo i don't like" when Donald Trump ships another few hundred innocent migrants to Guantanamo unimpeded then they can be in support of killing as many Arabs as humanly possible.
good thing these politicians aren't easily bought or i'd start to think they might abandon those issues too one day if pressed hard enough.... hmm....

However, the reelection of Trump casts this measure in a new light. His promise to turn the civil service into an engine of personal vengeance should be sufficient evidence that he’d likely abuse the powers granted under H.R. 9495, potentially allowing the president to target fairly well-known liberal organizations, such as the Center for American Progress, with punishing sanctions that would prevent such outfits from raising or banking money—penalties which, under the proposed law, such sanctioned organizations would be barred from pursuing legal recourse to plead their case. Moreover, in addition to activist groups, many universities and news outlets are nonprofit organizations.
While significantly lower than the 52 members who joined in last week’s vote to advance the bill, 15 Democrats is still a surprising number of representatives who seem to care more about wanting to neutralize irksome protesters than a fascist, authoritarian president targeting any nonprofit he doesn’t like. Here’s a full list of Democrats who voted for the bill:
Colin Allred—Texas
Yadira D. Caraveo—Colorado
Ed Case—Hawaii
Henry Cuellar—Texas
Don Davis—North Carolina

Vicente Gonzalez—Texas
Suzanne Marie Lee—Nevada

Excerpt from this story from Truthout:
Democrats just helped Republicans give President-elect Donald Trump the potential power to shut down nonprofits under the guise of fighting terrorism — while GOP lawmakers have quietly revealed a new blueprint for defunding organizations they disagree with.
Earlier this month, the House Energy and Commerce Committee laid out a plan to target environmental justice nonprofits and organizations working to transition the economy away from fossil fuels.
That report preceded a major House vote on Thursday in which Republicans and 15 Democrats passed legislation giving the Treasury Department the power to strip nonprofit news organizations, advocacy groups, and universities of their tax-exempt status.
The Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act was originally proposed last year, ostensibly to prevent U.S. nonprofits from supporting groups like Hamas after widespread protests over Israel’s invasion of Gaza. Nicknamed the “nonprofit killer,” it gives the president unprecedented authority to go after political opponents. Advocacy groups like the American Civil Liberties Union warned of the bill’s potential “to grant the executive branch extraordinary power
based on a unilateral accusation of wrongdoing.”
After an essentially identical bill failed to pass last week, the newly approved bill now goes to the Senate for a vote.
In the preceding weeks, the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s report focused on the Inflation Reduction Act’s distribution of federal funding, offering a preview of how the new terrorism legislation could be wielded for political purposes. It also highlighted the kinds of organizations that could be targeted, including those that support clean-energy policies like committing investments to renewable energy, phasing out fossil fuel production and use, and expanding public land conservation.
Criticizing the Biden administration’s environmental justice grants for marginalized groups historically inundated by pollution, the report says, “Enriching nonprofit organizations to spread radical, left-leaning ideology is an inappropriate use of taxpayer dollars.”
The plan singles out specific groups that the committee says have pushed a “radical rush-to-green agenda,” including Rewiring America, a nonprofit working on electrification, and New York City-based environmental justice group WE ACT. It castigated, for example, a blog post on WE ACT’s website “criticizing ‘Republican gas stove culture wars,’ and House GOP Members’ ‘preformative [sic], out-of-touch agenda.’”
Under the new bill just passed by the House, criteria for designations of “terrorism” are vague. If it passes the Senate and is signed into law, the Treasury Secretary would have broad discretion in the law’s enforcement and wouldn’t be required to share related evidence.
From Yahoo News:

Names of the 15 Democrats who votes to pass H.R. 9495
A bill that allows Nonprofits to be declare terrorist organizations

Henry Cuellar—Texas
Don Davis—North Carolina
Jared Golden—Maine
Vicente Gonzalez—Texas
Suzanne Marie Lee—Nevada

Call your representatives!
Take Action: Tell Congress to OPPOSE H.R. 9495
1. Visit the IS Action Center to sign a petition to oppose H.R. 9495. https://independentsector.quorum.us/campaign/92339/
2. Call your Congressional Representative TODAY and urge them to vote NO on H.R. 9495 when it comes up again for a vote. You can find contact information for your Member of Congress here.
https://www.house.gov/representa.../find-your-representative
3. Social Media Engagement: Post on your platforms and tag your Representative to urge them to oppose H.R.9495.
Sample posts:
ACTION NEEDED As a constituent of [@RepresentativesSocialMedia] and a staunch supporter of the nonprofit sector, I urge you to vote NO on H.R. 9495. This bill may be well-intentioned but it erodes due process and jeopardizes vital services for vulnerable communities.
Nonprofits are critical to our communities. H.R. 9495 may mean well, but it threatens due process and risks harming those we serve. [@RepresentativesSocialMedia], vote NO on #HR9495. #ProtectNonprofits
Sample script for calling your representative:
I’m calling to urge you to oppose H.R. 9495, the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act, scheduled for a vote later today. This bill poses a direct threat to nonprofits by granting the Treasury Secretary unchecked power to label organizations as “terrorist supporting” and strip their tax-exempt status. Even worse, this can happen without evidence, intentional links, or any requirement to disclose the reasons for the designation. The lack of due process and accountability leaves nonprofits defenseless against vague and potentially politically motivated accusations.
While the bill includes provisions for tax relief for American hostages—a noble cause—this should not come at the expense of jeopardizing nonprofit operations and democratic values. These provisions should be separated into their own bill that doesn’t include the unchecked harm to nonprofits.
Please oppose H.R. 9495 to protect nonprofits and the communities they serve. Thank you for your time and consideration.

This is a post a friend made on a different platform, asking people to copy+paste. I'm keeping the censored words censored, frankly because I'm lazy, even though I know tumblr works differently. Anyway, I think it's important:
Hi friends (in the USA)! Please call your representatives, especially the ones listed in this post, and ask them to vote NO on HR 9495. As you know, I usually shy away from legislative and electoral politics. This one is really important, though, and has a huge impact on ALL kinds of organizing.
Q: What is HR 9495?
A: HR 9495 would grant the executive branch of the United States the power to universally revoke the tax-exempt status of organizations (such as nonprofits, universities, and news outlets) by designating them as supporting t-rrorists. For many tax-exempt organizations, this would lead to shutdown. It would also give the Executive Branch more leverage over universities.
Q: But isn't t-rrorism bad?
A: The bill allows the revoking of tax-exempt status without due process. In other words, any organization that the executive branch decides it doesn't like could be designated as t-rrorist.
Q: Why does my Democratic representative support this?
A: Many Democrats support this because they've been on the receiving end of protest campaigns around their position on Palestine, or because they are sympathetic to the suppression of pro-Palestine protesters. If passed, this bill would give more leverage to suppress student speech at universities. For example, a university that has an official student group calling for ceasefire could be threatened with having its tax-exempt status revoked unless it shuts the student group down.
Q: I'm an anarchist/communist/socialist. Why should I call my representative? Isn't this some Eduard Bernstein shit? What's next, are you gonna tell me to join the DSA?
A: State repression sucks, and this bill is aimed specifically at reducing the ability to organize outside of electoral politics. In Atlanta, we've seen targeted attacks on nonprofits that support protesters, including the state of Georgia passing legislation banning bail funds! In other words, nonprofits can no longer bail out protesters whose bond is set at $650,000 in retaliation for protesting! This stuff is really bad and sometimes "by any means necessary" includes *shudder* calling your congressional representative.
Democrat Reps who voted ‘Yes’ on HR 9495 during 2/3 vote and who need to be urged to vote NO:
Colin Allred (D-TX), Nikki Budzinski (D-IL), Yadira Caraveo (D-CO), Ed Case (D-HI), Kathy Castor (D-FL), Jim Costa (D-CA), Angie Craig (D-MN), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Sharice Davids (D-KS), Valerie Foushee Davis (D-NC), Debbie Dingell (D-MI), Lois Frankel (D-FL), Jared Golden (D-ME), Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX), Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Josh Harder (D-CA), Jahana Hayes (D-CT), Steny Hoyer (D-MD), Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), Greg Landsman (D-OH), Susie Lee (D-NV), Mike Levin (D-CA), Kathy Manning (D-NC), Lucy McBath (D-GA), Grace Meng (D-NY), Gwen Moore (D-WI), Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), Frank Mrvan (D-IN), Donald Norcross (D-NJ), Frank Pallone (D-NJ), Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), Chris Pappas (D-NH), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA), Pat Ryan (D-NY), Adam Schiff (D-CA), Brad Schneider (D-IL), Hillary Scholten (D-MI), Kim Schrier (D-WA), Brad Sherman (D-CA), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), Eric Sorensen (D-IL), Greg Stanton (D-AZ), Haley Stevens (D-MI), Marilyn Strickland (D-WA), Tom Suozzi (D-NY), Emilia Sykes (D-OH), Shri Thanedar (D-MI), Norma Torres (D-CA), Ritchie Torres (D-NY), Juan Vargas (D-CA), Gabe Vasquez (D-NM), and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL).

Stargate rewatch: 2x04 - The Gamekeeper
Tumblr media
"Where there's a garden, there's snakes." Jack coming in with the pessimism, but it's a nice Goa'uld metaphor.
Oh hey, Daniel has allergies again!
This is a Jonathan Glassner episode (with Brad Wright sharing the story credit), directed by Martin Wood.
Time to get strapped into the Trauma Chair!
Jack finds himself back in East Germany, 1982 on a failed mission, Teal'c finds himself with hair.
Tumblr media
And Kawalsky is here! I love it when they bring back Kawalsky, it's a shame he doesn't get much to do.
Jack thinks the chairs were a time machine, Teal'c concedes it's possible - park that plot until the end of the season, boys.
Meanwhile Sam and Daniel are at the New York Museum of Art (I assume the Met?) wearing outfits that I unironically love. I'd totally wear that hoodie. Sam's skirt and boots are also a vibe.
Tumblr media
Note the spiral device on the door behind them that signifies the exit (although they don't know it). I couldn't see a designated exit in the scene with Jack and Teal'c though.
Daniel says he's been to the museum "many times" which is pretty dark since that's where his parent's died.
When Daniel brushes off the museum employee who tells them the exhibit isn't open she just smiles and walks away - she doesn't get paid enough to care, lol.
Daniel's parents are Claire and Melburn Jackson (the latter will show up again next season as Seth), who are tragically squished by a big block of stone that they were standing under instead of beside for some reason. To her credit, Claire is worried that the slab is swinging but Melburn assures her it's okay - oof.
Jack's attempts to change the outcome of the mission and the Keeper reveals himself. It's Dwight Schultz (Murdoch in The A-Team and Barclay in Star Trek: Next Gen) doing a good job despite his ridiculous hat.
Tumblr media
Some of us don't need fancy tech to replay the terrible moments of our lives over and over again - our brains handle that just fine (well certainly not fine
you know what I mean).
Jack decides to sit this one out, while Daniel makes some ineffectual efforts to coax his parents out from underneath the swinging slab of squish. Irreverence aside, it is kind of horrifying to think that Daniel actually witnessed his parents die as a young child - it's not stated here, but a later episode reveals he was eight years old.
Ultimately, they discover that no matter what they do they can't change their history, which could actually be some helpful therapy (and isn't a worlds away from prolonged exposure treatment for PTSD) - but the Keeper isn't trying to help them, and it begs the question of if they had explored all the options, whether he would have eventually allowed them to succeed in changing the events - otherwise where would the satisfaction for the residents?
Tumblr media
Aw, his parents call him Danny.
Also, Daniel's eye condition seems to be genetic. Or I've finally cracked the case and his eyesight isn't that bad, but he wears his glasses most of the time anyway to feel closer to his parents - he went into the same profession after all.
It's interesting that the Keeper doesn't choose more recent traumas of Jack and Daniel's lives that they both feel a huge amount of guilt for and wish they could change - Charlie's death and the abduction of Sha're. Perhaps those events are too raw for the Keeper to extract entertainment value from.
Or perhaps those memories are less accessible because the trauma is so fresh - these are events that drive Jack and Daniel and the Keeper wants them trapped, not remind them of why they’re fighting. The failed mission where Jack’s commander died and the death of Daniel’s parents are foundational memories, but they’re not directly relevant to their lives on SG-1 and so safer for the Keeper to have them explore.
Tumblr media
Just look at this hat!
The Keeper reveals he was unable to access Teal'c or Sam's minds - the first indication that Sam's physiology has been altered following her possession by Jolinar.
We have the classic fake release from the virtual reality, but not before we have a briefing scene where we're two for two with Daniel wearing his glasses on his head and being the only person drinking coffee.
Daniel also wants to go back and free the residents, he’s fully team Interference now. This week Jack’s team Not Our Problem.
"General without meaning (this time) to sound like a smartass, are you cracked?" LOL
Jack smelt a rat from the beginning, but it's when fake!Hammond mentions him having the chance to see his son that he knows it’s all a lie. George would absolutely never say that.
Tumblr media
I have to admit, the idea of being able to project yourself into not only any memory, but anywhere you can imagine is kind of appealing - kind of like a Holodeck. It's the never leaving - and being kept against your will - that's the issue.
We're getting into Matrix territory here with virtual world vs real world, two years before that film was released (although of course it was hardly the first to deal with constructed realities). Would you be happy in a simulation where you could go anywhere and do anything you could imagine, even if it wasn’t “real”? Honestly, maybe, but after 1000 years you’d want to go out and see the flowers.
Daniel puts his glasses back on in the middle of the conversation with the residents for no discernible reason, and I know I'm hung up on this, but as someone who generally tries to make sense of things on a Watsonian level (even if accepting that some things only have a Doylist reason) I can't help but be distracted by it.
Tumblr media
"Haven't you people missed me at all?" I have!
The Keeper running around still steepling his fingers is kinda hilarious.
Bye Trauma Chair, see you - inexplicably - in season 8.
And Daniel's glasses are back on his head, I give up.
"YOU ARE RUINING THE GARDEN!" The Keeper's indigence at the residents picking the flowers, lol. I love it when an actor just commits to a role.
Tumblr media
Ultimately this is an episode about control - Jack and Daniel have no control over what happened in the past, they have to accept it no matter how they might wonder if things could have gone differently. The Keeper has valid reasons for fearing the residents may destroy the world like they did before and therefore wanting to keep them contained in the virtual world, but that’s not his choice to make, and he must cede their free will to nurture or destroy.

U.S. users email your representatives this, and make sure to include your zip code:
I am your constituent. I am strongly in favor of defunding Israel. I want my opinion logged on every single one of these pieces of legislation. It is an atrocity that the USA is sending our taxpayer dollars, weaponry, and other support to Israel in order to aid in the genocide of the Palestinian people. It does not reflect the will of your constituents, and I demand that you correct this by voting for/against the following bills, resolutions, and legislation.
To be frank, I will be basing my vote for you in upcoming elections on this issue. I will be watching closely to see how you vote on issues regarding funding to Israel. I will not vote for you in the next election if you vote to send any money, support, or weaponry to Israel. I will be voting for you if you vote to block money, support, and weaponry to Israel.
This is the current legislation I am for, and the current legislation I am against. I would like your office to record my opinion for each bill, and I would like you to take this into consideration when you vote.
I am FOR the following, and expect you to vote for this and co-sponsor, either now or when matching legislation reaches your office.
H.Res. 786: by Rep. Cori Bush
H.Res. 388 by Rep. Rashida Tlaib
H.R. 3103 by Rep. Betty McCollum
I am against Joe Biden’s proposal to spend billions of dollars on Israel via a package for Israel, Ukraine, Taiwan, and the US border. Biden is asking for $100 BILLION for this package and it is only 1 YEAR'S worth of funding. This is ABSOLUTELY unacceptable, and I am against you voting for ANY bill that spends even $1 on Israel. I do not care what else is in the bill. If it gives money to Israel, I am against it.
I am AGAINST the following, and expect you to vote against this and not co-sponsor, either now or when matching legislation reaches your office.

I am against any legislation that allows troops to deploy to the Middle East in support roles for Israel, as proposed by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
I am against Netanyahu’s ground invasion of Gaza, which will inevitably lead to mass killings of Palestinian civilians and escalate violence. If there are any future bills supporting this, you need to vote against them and not co-sponsor.
The U.S. Constitution and the War Powers Act stipulate that only Congress can authorize the president to use military force in a foreign war, except in cases of self-defense. Previous administrations from both parties have ignored this, with unauthorized strikes in places like Syria and Libya. I want you to stand against ANY use of military force that supports Israel or hurts Palestine.
And of course, I am against the usual funding of $3.8 billion PER YEAR to Israel. This 10-year agreement began in 2016. I do not want a renewal in 2026, and in the next election, I will vote for representatives who WILL NOT VOTE TO FUND ISRAEL. I will be keeping track of how you vote now, and I will not vote for you if you decide to fund Israel in any way.
I am a single-issue voter for this. I want you to defund Israel. I do not want a single dollar spent on supporting Israel. I will be paying attention to how you vote in the upcoming weeks and months, and if you vote to fund or provide weapons, troops, or intelligence to Israel, I will NOT vote for you in the next election.
We are paying attention to the budget. We know when you're giving aid to a country committing genocide instead of helping your constituents in the USA. Both myself and tens of thousands of other constituents have spent years saying that we don’t want our hard-earned taxpayer dollars going to Israel. The lack of willingness to fund anything for American citizens, but the quickness with which you take action for Israel is telling. It is unacceptable.
As an elected official, you have the opportunity to listen to the public and stand against genocide. Israel is currently committing war crimes against Palestine. You can stop this by defunding Israel. THOUSANDS of Palestinian people have been killed, 1/3 of them children, in just a couple of days. One child every 15 minutes is being killed. YOU can prevent this by refusing to send additional weapons and funding to Israel.
We are currently spending BILLIONS of dollars EVERY YEAR on Israel. I do not want my money going towards the ethnic cleansing and genocide of Palestinians. Not a dollar more.

Got the questions from here. Courtesy of @mischief-and-tea-by-the-sea.
6, 37, 39, 48.
6. Describe your personality in 3 words or less. Mischievous Alien Thaumaturge.
37. Do you read a lot? What's your favorite book? Yes, I do read a hell of a lot, mostly on a tablet or on my computer. If I named one single book that people would point to as if to say "That is definitely a book I would associate with them," it would be The Klingon Dictionary (TKD) by Marc Okrand. I've been associated with the Klingon language for so long, I even write a regular tumblr blog about it. Though if you really knew me, you'd realise that this is but one of many interests I have, and therefore I have a lot more favourite books than just this one - though TKD is the book most strongly-associated with me.
39. Do you have a nickname? What is it? This is the fun thing. I never really had a nickname, not one which stuck at any rate because I was bullied as a child, and most of the nicknames they gave me were slurs or pejoratives - and since I never answered people when they called me "Dalek" or whatever, the nicknames never stuck. Water off a duck's back, and all that. But on Facebook, somebody there started calling me Spiral, after the hypnotic animated gif images - and that is a nickname I accepted and adopted. It's only a nickname if it's given to you, after all. So please, in polite company, call me Spiral.
48. Who is your role model? This is a fun question. You know how I couldn't pick just one favourite book - just the book most people associate me with? Same deal for role models. That way, I can't say I'll have run out of role models if the one I idolise turns out to be a Trumploon (Trump Chump? Trumpoline? Trumpster? Trumpa Loompa?) like Dwight Bloody Schultz gods damn it. So I'll produce a shortlist. Actors Brad Dourif, David Dastmalchian, and Leland Orsler for their entertaining portrayals of damaged souls. Actors Keanu Reeves and Robert Downey Jr., for consistently being awesome. The late authors Robert Anton Wilson, Terry Pratchett, and Shakuntala Devi for the wonders they gave us in the shape of books which shaped my life. And authors Marc Okrand, Marc W Miller, and Robert Greene for creating three more lots of wonders which still shape my life to this day.
